SEL Academy

The SEL Academy provides school faculty, counselors, and administration with the resources to support the growth and development of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies for all students (Tier 1) in their care, with a particular emphasis on how SEL can be adapted to meet theÌýneeds of their individual school communities.

Objectives

Based on CASEL’s social and emotional learning competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, alongside Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework, through professional learning and access to coaching, participants in the SEL Academy will learn to:

  • Articulate a purpose and rationale for SEL in which they develop ashared understanding and vision for Tier 1 SEL in their schoolcommunity
  • Assess current SEL practices in their school community utilizing an SEL asset-based inventory
  • Set goals and develop a roadmap for implementation within the school community to meet their individual needs
  • Train and support a distributed leadership model by creating confident teacher leaders to drive this initiative in their schools
  • Create a community of Catholic educators who dialogue with expert leaders and teachers with demonstrated commitment to SEL

Audience

The SEL Academy is designed for PK-12 Catholic school educators, leaders, and counselors.

2024-2025 Dates

  • The program begins July 30 - August 1, 2024 with an in-person seminar at Boston College.
  • Participants participate in a virtual SEL series from September 2024 to March 2025.Ìý
  • Participants receive customized, individual school coaching (in-person and virtual; in-person coaching for schools outside of the New England area will be dependent on coach availability.)
  • The program concludes with an in-person seminar at Boston College in April 2025 (closing seminar date to come).

Costs

Year 1:

The cost is $7,500 for a team of three leaders / teachers per school. Schools may add more teachers for an additional $2,500 per person. First-year participation includes:

  • a three-day in-person seminar at Boston College, July 30 - August 1, 2024;
  • a virtual SEL series from September 2024 to March 2025;
  • customized, individual school coaching (in-person and virtual; in-person coaching for schools outside of the New England area will be dependent on coach availability)
  • a concluding in-person seminar at Boston College in April 2025 (closing seminar date to come).

Year 2:

The second year of the program is optional and includes ongoing coaching for schools that have completed year 1 of the program. Schools that register for a second year are charged $5,000 for ongoing monthly coaching and professional development support.

Facilitator: Molly McMahon, Ph.D.

Molly McMahon

The SEL Academy is facilitated by Dr. Molly McMahon, Director of Leadership Programs at the Roche Center. Molly has more than 20 years of administrative experience in Catholic and public schools, and has served as a teacher-leader and principal. Prior to joining the Roche Center, Molly was instrumental in helping Chelmsford Public Schools facilitate SEL effectively in all schools as approved Tier 3 SEL sites. In addition to facilitating the Roche Center's SEL Academy, she has presented on SEL and mental health in Catholic schools in keynotes, at professional develpment sessions with schools and (arch)diocesan partners, and at conferences such as the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Molly holds a doctorate in K-12 administration from Boston College.
